Yahaya Inuwa, the new leader of the National Assembly, has been praised for his leadership and commitment to progress. The assembly's speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, who led the session, congratulated him for the distinction. Inuwa took office following the resignation of Omoniyi Chukwuemeka Oba Nwapa, who did not seek re-election at the time of the 2019 general elections.
The new leader was unanimously elected by the senate after a three-hour debate that saw members discuss issues such as corruption, the economy and healthcare among others. His election is seen as a sign of hope for Nigeria as he pledged to clean up the country and restore its glory days.
Speaking on the occasion, Gbajabiamila said: "I am very happy to see Inuwa taking over as speaker. He has already shown us what he can do and I have no doubt that he will continue to deliver on his promise."
Inuwa, who thanked his colleagues for the confidence in him, described himself as humbled to be leading the country's legislative chamber.
"We are grateful to have you on board, Sir," he said.
He also promised to work towards creating a better environment for all Nigerians.
Amid growing concerns about the fragility of democracy in the country, Inuwa's election comes just weeks after a court ruled that the presidential election held last year was marred by massive fraud.
But some analysts believe that the new leadership may help reverse that trend.
Kemi Adeosun, a former vice president, said: "If the National Assembly can take this opportunity to right the wrongs of the past, it would be a wonderful development. This could be seen as a wake-up call to the nation."
