Area basketball roundup for Dec. 21: Ethan girls down No. 1 Wagner, ending Red Raider home win streak
Cedarville's Ethan girls basketball team ended their winless streak with an easy 57-37 victory over top-ranked Wagner on Wednesday at Homecoming. The game marked the end of Wagner's 28-game home win streak.
Wagner has been the top-rated team in Division II since 1950, when Cedarville was still in Division III. They have not lost a home game since their 66-40 loss to Kenyon in 2005.
The top-seeded Vikings started strong, jumping out to a 15-point lead in the first quarter. But the Eagles cut it back to just five points before half time. In the second half, Wagner outscored the Eagles 21-6 and closed out the game with a 13-point halftime lead.
Sophomore Kelsey Bailey led Cedarville with 16 points and six rebounds. Freshman Avery Hodges added 10 points and eight rebounds, but she was held off the bench for much of the first half.
In the post-game interviews, Ethan head coach Tom Johnson praised his players for their effort, but also noted that he knew there was some work to do. "They played well and I loved how they stayed together," he said. "When they gave up early, it wasn't due to mistakes but because they didn't fight hard enough."
Vikings' senior Macy Martin led all scorers with 17 points, while junior Shelby Beard added 12. The only other doubles digit scorer for Wagner was freshman Jessica Sell, who had nine points and four assists.
