* Tazewell County cyber attack remains under investigation - As per the statement made by the Tazewell County Sheriff’s Department, The incident occurred in January 2019 in Tazewell county Kansas. According to a report by CNN, the Tazewell County Sheriffs office has been investigating hacking since early January 2019, citing emails from law enforcement agencies across the country indicating that 20,000 voting machines have been stolen across 6 states. The affected voting machines were all used at the time of last year’s elections.
The Tazewell County Sheriffs office stated that the hacking involved “select election computers”, which included voting systems such as voting machines, servers and other voting equipment. Law enforcement agency sources told CNN that more than 750,000 votes had been tallied during the investigation period.
The National Election Security Agency also launched an investigation into the incident, and provided support to local authorities.
It is not yet known how many votes were stolen but law enforcement sources have said that some voters reported their devices have been tampered with.
Local officials are warning against speculation and suggesting people who received a suspicious email should not respond to it because they could be opening themselves up to a phishing scam.
