Two London-area companies fined £400k in fatal Teeple Terrace collapse
In 2020, two London-area companies were fined $400,000 by the British government for their role in the fatal collapse of the Teeple Terrace building in the heart of the city. The incident occurred on February 16, when the unstable building collapsed, killing 15 people and injuring several more.
The investigation into the accident was conducted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), which found that the failure of the building's external staircase led to the tragic event. The HSE stated that the building's stairwell had not been properly maintained or inspected, and that the risk of an accident occurring due to structural weaknesses existed.
Two companies - Pinnacle Homes Ltd and TSG Homes Limited - were both responsible for the construction of the Teeple Terrace building. Pinnacle Homes Ltd was the developer and owner of the property, while TSG Homes Limited was the contractor who built the building.
Both companies have now been fined $400,000 each for their involvement in the deaths. The fines were imposed under the Building Act 1998, which makes it illegal for developers and contractors to negligently build unsafe buildings.
It is a sad reminder that accidents can still occur even with modern safety measures in place. The HSE must continue to monitor construction sites closely to ensure that all necessary precautions are taken to prevent such tragedies from occurring again.
We call for stricter regulations and greater accountability for developers and contractors to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
